Many of us in life have had experiences where a person is there to support or aid us at just the right time, whether it was love, encouragement, protection or a kick in the butt that person – that guardian angel was there, exactly as they were needed. Were these mere coincidences or acts of divine providence? Seventeen Guardian Angels by Cynthia Papierniak portrays 17 true-life accounts of her experiences with 17 people that were in her life at the right time, she considers them as her guardian angels. They came from all lifestyles, stepping up to help Cynthia Papierniak, during the many times where she needed love, support, protection, and at times direction. This novel not only serves as a memoir of those instances in Cynthia’s life; it is also an indelible and loving “Thank You” to each person for their help at her times of crisis.
The book is fraught with instances of her mother’s abusive behavior, which to say the least are quite disturbing. One instance in particular really turns your blood cold, where her mother deemed it necessary during a fit of rage to chase her viciously with a butcher knife because she made a mistake with the delivery of a trunk. During this instance, a visiting neighbor saved her, from certain harm and if ever a guardian angel was needed – this situation was it. Life is hard enough but for a young girl but, to have to grow up with a mother that was violent, abusive and often times given to public humiliation it is no wonder that the author needed an intervening forces to help her survive life. The effects of such traumatizing events would be enough to send anyone crazy or worse. However, luckily for the author she was blessed and did have help during those times with each incident leading her closer to a better point in her life.
Overall, I enjoyed Seventeen Guardian Angels; it was emotionally wrenching but written in a grounded tone that clearly depicted the author’s experiences and emotions. I recommend this as a good read that will intrigue readers and cause them to reflect on its contents, the darkness of the human condition and the prospects of divine intervention through guardian angels.
